What I hold while I paint
“When I pick up the brush, the room goes still. It’s just the color, the surface, and something I carry that I still can’t quite name.”
“I don’t script every stroke. I paint the way I breathe — letting the hand say what language can’t. Sometimes I only understand a piece after it’s finished.”
“Each layer is a decision, a hesitation, a risk. For me, art is the courage to show outwardly what most people keep hidden.”
Why I make this work
I want someone, anywhere, to stand before a piece and feel less alone in what they carry. If that happens, the work has already succeeded. I also hope to build a life from this practice — and to open the same door for other artists who have plenty to say, and too few places to say it.
How a piece comes to life
Making a work isn’t only painting. It’s this entire arc:
Feel
It begins with an emotion too large to keep — loss, tenderness, anger, hope.
Hold
I carry it for days, sometimes weeks. I watch. I wait for it to ask for the color and form it needs.
Paint
I close the studio door, put on music, and disappear into the work. Graphite, acrylic, oil, gold — whatever the piece demands.
Release
I sign it JR. Letting a piece go is releasing a part of myself so it can live on someone else’s wall.
